A Closer Look into the Air Jordan 8 “Playoffs” Retro Release

A Closer Look into the Air Jordan 8 Playoffs Retro Release

The Air Jordan 8 “Playoffs” were worn by Michael Jordan during the Chicago Bulls’ unprecedented three-peat run that saw His Airness and cohorts dismantle the Hawks, Cavs, Knicks and Suns on the way to another title for Chicago. Amongst the highlights of the gallop through the Eastern and Western Conferences were Jordan’s exploits in Madison Square Garden where he torched the Knicks for 54 points in Game 4 after the local press antagonized him following a 3-18 shooting performance in Game 3. When all was said and done – and another ring was on Jordan’s finger – he had averaged 35.1 ppg, 6.7 rpg and 6 apg for the entire playoffs – and a staggering 41.0 ppg during the six-game finals. Of course, no one could predict that Jordan would retire following the Bulls’ first three-peat.

The retro release of the Air Jordan 8 “Playoffs” marks the return of a sneaker that would have no Nike branding on it whatsoever when it was delivered – with chief Jumpman brand architect Tinker Hatfield insisting that Michael Jordan’s own logo could carry the success of the shoe without the Swoosh.

Additionally, the black/black/true red colorway was part of an official tradition/rule for the Bulls where players were only allowed to wear black shoes during the playoffs. True Jumpman enthusiasts can thank their winning traditions for the various dark colorways we’d come to enjoy over the years. Look for this latest retro via Jordan Brand accounts on June 29, priced at $ 160 USD.
